Meråker

Heading east from Trondheim Værnes Airport the E14 road follows the wide, fertile floodplain of the river Stjørdalselva. Pretty wooden farmhouses and the occasional salmon fishing lodge dot the narrow valley floor as the Stjørdal Valley begins to narrow and climb towards Meråker.

This ancient land of mountain farms, silver mining and ore smelting has been shaped by fast flowing rivers fed by the headwaters formed by snowmelt from the high mountains that border Norway and Sweden.

As the traditional smelting industries closed the cross-border Meråker-Storlien region has focused on developing an attractive tourism destination based on mountain sports and nature based activities. The close proximity to Trondheim Værnes Airport (40 kilometers away) means Meråker-Storlien is ideal for those looking for short-breaks.

The steep terrain and rich wildlife attracts nature photographers in search of Golden eagle, Goshawk and moose and the indigenous Sámi have herded reindeer in these rugged mountains for a millennia.

At Meråker the Rypetoppen Adventure Park offers a wide range of activities such as zip lining, climbing, trail walking and paddling and during the winter season there’s the popular ski resort at Meråker Alpine.

Bodil Bakken of Norway Husky Adventure based just north of Meråker at Bjørkslettet in Kopperå offers a range of exciting dog sledding adventures from a few hours to several days. The high mountain plateau from Kopperå to Storlien offers spectacular scenery and reliable snow conditions ideal for polar expedition training. ATE – Adventure Training & Expeditions offers a range of arctic training courses in the Storlien area due to ease of access, range of accommodations and the ideal terrain for honing backcountry Nordic skiing skills.

Meråker is really a “Mekka” for cross country skiing and the high school is famous for helping young cross country skiing athletes to turn into world class athletes and even several olympic champions. The whole region of Trøndelag captured more medals in the Olympics in Sochi than the US in total. That’s impressive for a region of only 450 000 inhabitants.
