Family Wilderness Week in Lierne

Family time is precious. Today’s hectic, urban lifestyles mean that we’re often too busy to spend quality time with those we love and care for. We’re increasingly becoming disconnected with nature and rarely find the time to appreciate the simple pleasures that outdoor experiences provide.

Itinerary

DAY 1:

Your holiday begins in Trondheim from where you’ll take an afternoon train to Grong. We will advise on morning flight arrivals or you can book accommodation in Trondheim to extend your trip.

Your hosts will meet you at Grong train station and transfer you through scenic countryside to your base in Lierne, which will take about an hour’s drive. You will stay in rustic cabin accommodation on Gunn’s farmstead. In the evening you will share dinner with your host and her family.

DAY 2:

Today the excitement begins as you head to Lierne National Park Center where you’ll learn about bears and, most importantly, how to behave around them. You’ll then continue by bicycle and ride on dust roads in bear country. You may not see any bears, for they are shy animals but you will most certainly see their tracks and learn all about them during your day.

Lunch and dinner will be served around the fire.

DAY 3:

Today begins with a guided hiking tour. You’ll carry with you baskets, bags, scissors and knives – tools to help you forage for wild food. You’ll learn how to spot edible plants and berries and find out about their uses. You’ll share a wilderness lunch before returning to the cabins where you’ll together cook a multi-course dinner using the wild ingredients you have gathered during your hike. You’ll learn how to think creatively using the ingredient you have in front of you.

DAY 4:

Today you will learn how to preserve your wild food to prolong the enjoyment of nature’s bounty. If it is berry-picking season, you’ll learn how to prepare jam so you’ll have a souvenir to bring home with you. Rest of the day at leisure.

DAY 5:

Today is free for you to decide on how you’d like to spend your holiday in Norway. Perhaps you’ll opt for a horse-back riding mountain tour with a local guide. Experience the ‘Nordland horses’ on a full day or half day tour with all meals included (not included in the price).

DAY 6:

Enjoy the morning at leisure before a wildlife safari at dusk. Depending on the season, you will enjoy a beaver safari, a moose safari or a birdwatching tour. The tour will include hiking and canoeing, so rubber boots will be needed. A wilderness dinner will be provided.

DAY 7:

Today is a day for your own family adventures. Your hosts will help you to decide which activity to enjoy – whether it’s a family walk, wild swimming or fishing. You’ll immerse yourselves into the natural landscapes for a final day and enjoy the luxury of silence in nature. There are over 2000 lakes in the nearby surroundings so you will be spoilt for choice for places to explore and to re-ignite the child in you. There are also easy marked hiking trails so you can enjoy a walk with viewpoints and the chance to search for signs of wildlife.

Your hosts will await your return with fun games for the family and a chance to reflect on your holiday during an evening barbecue on the farm.

DAY 8:

Today you will bid a fond farewell to your hosts and drive to the train station for your onward journey to Trondheim.
